Maccafferi Zinc-Coated Gabion Baskets are robust, flexible wire-mesh containers designed to be filled with appropriately graded stones on site. Once assembled, connected, and filled, the baskets form strong, permeable, monolithic structures suitable for retaining soil, controlling erosion, protecting waterways, and supporting civil engineering works.
The gabions are manufactured from double-twisted hexagonal woven steel wire mesh in an 8 × 10 mesh configuration. The steel wire is heavily galvanized with a Class A zinc coating, providing protection against corrosion and improving durability in exposed environments. The double-twist construction helps prevent progressive unraveling if an individual wire is accidentally cut or damaged.
Key Applications of Gabion Basket
Zinc-coated gabions are suitable for:
Gravity retaining walls
Riverbank and shoreline protection
River-training and water-management works
Channel linings
Weirs and hydraulic structures
Bridge-abutment and culvert protection
Slope stabilization
Road and railway embankment protection
Erosion and scour control
Noise-barrier construction
Landscaping and architectural features
Main benefits of Gabion Box
Flexible construction that can accommodate minor settlement and ground movement
Permeable structure that allows water to drain through naturally
Double-twisted mesh provides stability and resistance to unraveling
Heavy zinc coating protects the steel wire against corrosion
Stronger selvage wires reinforce all panel edges
Stone filling provides substantial mass and resistance to water and soil forces
Can blend naturally into the surrounding environment
Vegetation may establish within the stone voids over time
Modular system allows different structure sizes and configurations
Suitable for both engineering and decorative applications

Assembly and Installation
Gabion baskets are supplied unfilled and assembled on site. Securely connect adjacent panels and baskets using the specified lacing wire or approved steel fastening rings.
Where rings are used, the TDS specifies:
Ring-wire diameter: 3.00 mm
Tensile strength: Greater than 1,720 MPa
Pull-apart strength: Greater than 2.0 kN
Maximum ring spacing: 200 mm
Nominal overlap after closure: 25 mm
The assembled baskets should be properly aligned, connected to adjoining units, and filled progressively with clean, hard, durable, and suitably sized stone. Internal diaphragms, bracing and careful stone placement help maintain the basket’s shape and minimize excessive bulging.
Stone-filling Guidance
The stone used should generally be:
Hard, durable and resistant to weathering
Free from excessive soil, clay and organic matter
Larger than the mesh opening to prevent material loss
Well graded to reduce large voids
Carefully placed along exposed faces for a neat finish
The project engineer should determine the exact stone grading, foundation preparation, structural dimensions, and installation method based on site conditions and expected loads.
